Training Philosophy

Our Philosophy:
The “Illness-Wellness-Fitness Continuum”

There are three tiers that make up what we feel the model of fitness should be that is called the “Illness-Wellness-Fitness Continuum.” This model explains that all human beings’ health can be measured along a continuum ranging from “illness” to “wellness” to “fitness” depending on how they rank on any number of health metrics such as blood pressure, resting heart rate, body fat percentage, strength and virtually any measure that can be applied.

The majority of our population is satisfied with being at or below the average for these metrics. The problem with that complacency is that inevitably at some point in each person’s life the unthinkable is going to happen and our health is going to suffer a setback in some form or another.

If people go through life at or below the “wellness” portion of this continuum, that setback is going to drop them well below normal into the critical “illness” range which is much more difficult to recover from and puts peoples’ lives at risk.

Essentially, by striving to achieve a higher level of fitness, you are hedging against future unavoidable and unpredictable health setbacks in the same way that keeping extra money in a savings account prevents you from going bankrupt when unexpected expenses occur in life. It is a safeguard that will allow you and your body to work through health setbacks.


First Tier:  The “Illness” Tier: Physical Therapy

This tier is for those of less than average wellness trying to improve, and are experiencing:

  • Injuries
  • Recovery from surgery
  • Balance or neurological issues
  • Suffering from pain
  • Poor health and are having
  • Difficulty with functional mobility

The Ryan Ferns Healthplex has a state of the art physical therapy department equipped with the most advanced rehabilitation devices in the region. Two examples are the Hydroworx 500 Series Underwater Treadmill and the Biodex Balance System SD.

The Hydroworx Underwater Treadmill was designed for and is utilized by nearly every professional and major collegiate sports program in the country for rapid rehabilitation of their athletes.

The Biodex Balance System SD is extremely versatile, it is the only system that provides a fast, accurate Fall Risk Screening and Conditioning Program for older adults; closed-chain, weightbearing assessment and training for lower extremity patients; and adds the balance assessment component to a concussion management program.


Second Tier: The “Wellness” Tier: Wellness Center

The second tier is is when you are looking to increase:

  • Strength
  • Cardio endurance
  • Reduce body fat
  • Stamina

This tier of you fitness is supported with our  fully equipped wellness center offering the latest in Cybex and BodyCraft strength equipment, and Life Fitness and Star Trac cardio equipment, as well as an indoor walking track. This portion of the facility is operational twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. This twenty-four hour facility was designed with our clients who do shift-work in mind.

Many of the largest employers in the Ohio Valley are hospitals, coal/gas drillers, police and fire departments, and casinos which operate nearly all hours of the day. Therefore, it was important to offer a facility that could keep up with the demanding work schedules of these individuals.


Third Tier: The “Fitness” Tier:
Crossfit, Group Fitness & Personal Training

The third tier, the “fitness” tier, is for those who are:

  • Plateaued in their fitness level
  • Looking for high-intensity workouts
  • Wanting well-rounded fitness

Our facility supports this tier with a 3000 square feet of personal training utopia. With rubber floors throughout, 14’ ceiliings, a multitude of rubberized dumbbells and free weights, barbells, medicine balls, plyometric boxes, kettlebells, pullup bars, benches, squat racks, sleds, rowers, and even climbing ropes, it is the ideal arena for taking your fitness to the next level.

This portion of the facility was designed specifically to be the ultimate CrossFit training facility, but is also a versatile area that can be utilized by our personal trainers for one-on-one training, sports camps, spin classes, yoga, pilates, and boot camps as well as a variety of other fitness-related activities.

The Ryan Ferns Healthplex strives for all patients and clients to eventually incorporate these programs into their lives and reach the highest tier to be at the highest fitness level.
